Earth's Smile Pottery
I have been making pottery on and off for 40 years. My regular job was as an environmental scientist and microbiologist. I made pots as a hobby, needing a creative outlet to balance my science work. And although I have retired from my regular job, I find I cannot stop potting. My pottery skills are a combination of self taught and some formal art and pottery classes. I enjoy both wheel throwing and handbuilding pots. Over the last few years I have concentrated on using a decorating technique called graffito. I apply a black slip to leather hard white stoneware clay and carve images through the slip.
The pots are then bisque fired, glazed and a final firing to cone 5. | like to incorporate images of the natural world, animals and plants. For me, it is important to make functional pots; something people will use every day and enjoy
